Alternatives

Cleavr alternatives.
Four honest options.

Cleavr covers PHP and Node.js on your own VPS with a clean UI and provider integrations. If you're looking past it, these are the four realistic paths — trade-offs stated plainly, one of them ours.

The real options

Four honest choices.

We build one of these, so read with that in mind. Trade-offs are listed for all four — including ours.

Sproobo

Docker-everything on servers you own, managed control plane.

Strengths

  • Any runtime, not just PHP and Node — anything you can containerize
  • Pinned versions for apps and databases, decoupled from the host distro
  • Outbound-only agent: no SSH keys held, no inbound ports
  • Off-box builds, so a deploy never competes with production for CPU

Trade-offs

  • Control plane is managed, not self-hosted
  • Not open source
  • No built-in server-creation or DNS integration with cloud providers yet

Ploi

A feature-dense native panel at a friendly price.

Strengths

  • More panel surface than Cleavr: WordPress installs, daemons, load balancers
  • Consistently affordable, with a reputation for fast human support
  • Large, established user base and documentation

Trade-offs

  • Native host coupling: PHP and databases from system packages
  • Node.js support is less central than Cleavr's
  • Builds run on the production server

Coolify

Open-source, fully self-hosted PaaS.

Strengths

  • Free and open source, with a very active community
  • Container-based, so you leave native host coupling behind
  • Control plane on your own hardware if that's a hard requirement

Trade-offs

  • You operate the platform: upgrades, backups, restores
  • Builds run on your servers
  • Data in named Docker volumes by default

Roll it yourself

Bare VPS + Docker + a proxy, wired by hand.

Strengths

  • Total control over every choice
  • Zero platform fees
  • You learn the entire stack

Trade-offs

  • You build deploys, TLS, rollbacks, backups and monitoring yourself
  • Every server becomes a snowflake unless you automate
  • Bus factor of one

Straight answers

Cleavr alternative questions.

Most often it's the native model itself. Cleavr provisions PHP and Node from host packages, so runtime versions are tied to what the distro and its repositories offer. Teams that want pinned, per-app versions — or runtimes beyond PHP and Node — tend to look at container-based platforms.
Ploi, or Laravel Forge if you're PHP-heavy. Both are native panels in the same shape as Cleavr, so the mental model carries over directly. If you're leaving the native model rather than the vendor, Sproobo and Coolify are the container-based routes.
In the native-panel world it's genuinely one of Cleavr's better features — Ploi and Forge are more PHP-centric. On container platforms the question dissolves: a Node app is just an image, exactly like a Python, Go or Ruby one.
Yes. All four options can run on a separate server next to your Cleavr-managed ones. Sproobo in particular is built for one-server-at-a-time migration and has a free plan, so you can compare them side by side before committing.
